"The Essential 55" is a child educational book. It was written by a school teacher in America Ron Clark, and the book was and maybe still is the New York Times Bestseller of the year.
"The Essential 55" describes the 55 rules and expectations he had of his students in Harlem and how he used manners and respect to help his classes achieve outstanding test scores.
Here are some of them:
Rule 2, Make eye contac---when someone is speaking keep your eyes on him or her at all times. If someone makes comment, turn and face that person.
Rule 3, Congratulating a classmate---if soneone in the class wins a game or does some thing well, we will congratulate that person.
Rule 4, Respect other student' comments, opinions, and ideas.
Rule 5, If you win, do not brag; if you lost , do not show anger.
Rule 6, if you are asked a question in converstaion, ask a question in return--it is only polite to show others that you are just as interested in them as they are in you.
Rule 7, Cover you mouth when you sneeze or cough and say execuse me.
Rule 8, Do not show disrespect with gestures.
Rule 9, Always say thank you when given something
Rule 16, You must complete your homework everyday.
Rule 23, Know other teachers' name and greet them in the hall by name.
Rule 25, Greet visitors and make them feel welcome
Rule 26, Do not save seats in the lunchroom.
Rule 27, Do not stare at a student how is being reprimanded
Rule 33, When meeting new people, shake hands and repeat their names.
Rule 35, When someone drops something and you are close to it, pick it up.
Rule 36, Hold the door for people rather than letting it close on them
Rule 37, If someone bumps into you, say execuse me, even if it was not your fault.
Rule 41, At home, answer your phone in a polite and appropriate manner
Rule 43, On escalators, stand to the right, walk to the left.
Rule 45, Never cut in line.
Rule 46, No talking in a movie theater during the movie
Rule 49, Stand up for what you believe in---you should not take no for an answer if your heart and mind are leading you in a direction that you feel strongly about.
Rule 53, No matter the circumstances, always be honest.
Rule 55, Be the best person you can be.
This book is good for parents, students as well as teachers. If our youngersters possess half of the qualifities described in this book, I am sure our world would be a much better place to live.
